Very often,  many 'special bodied' MGs, and many racing replicas,  just don't tick all the boxes, but here's one that truely does do all that.

Originally designed and built from the Peter Gregory stable, this to my mind is one of his best creations/restorations on the narrower series chassis.   Many cars built on Magna chassis, as opposed to the wider Magnette chassis  can have rallying and racing limitations, but when given the 'N' Magnette wider axles, the excellent larger Wolseley Hornet brakes, and a really handsome, well proportioned body, the car is a  match for many of the N & K series specials,  whilst giving exactly the same driver experience yet at a far lower cost.

So here we have a 6 cyl.  'L' Magna that started life as a less-than-loved saloon, first sold as WJ 9742 to a Mr. F.P. Nicholson of Sheffield in April 1933.  There is little history known of its whereabouts until found abandoned in the 1960s, eventually ending up with Peter Gregory  as a rolling chassis which he used as the basis for the car you see here today.

The car is built on a standard 'L' chassis , with the wider N series 3' 9" axles,   period 12" hydraulically operated finned brakes, Marles Weller steering, Duplex Andre Hartford front shock absorbers, anti-tramp cables, new stub axles and high ratio steel cased 4-star differential.  The rebuilt wheels are fitted with 500 x 18 Firestone tyres which have given enormous success on 2 recent European rallies.

One of the many excellent features of this car is that it is fitted with the powerful MG KD engine, with magneto ignition, twin fuel pumps, and  bored to 1400cc (per V5), coupled to a pre-war pre-select gearbox with MG's  'Q' remote and blown via a Marshall 85 nose-mounted supercharger with HV8 SU carburettor giving in excess of 100BHP......     This is no slouch, and would be ideal for those wishing to undertake UK rallies like the Flying Scotsman,  or European rallies akin to the Mille Miglia.  It also presents as a really exciting road car, the very well proportioned body allowing for sliding seat adjustment for those of 5' 6" height  to those of 6' 3".  In addition the very comfortable leather bucket seats are wider than most giving this wide range of seating positions, so often a drawback of the early MG  cars.  NOT so this one.     Further more the dropped cockpit entry makes life easy for access and the well wrapped Brooklands exhaust  gives the passenger ease of entry also..

The alloy/wood body is of the original MG practice and this example is particularly pleasing in design. It is often said ..."if it looks right it IS right" and I think you'll agree this does.   The rear of the car  follows the K3 pattern with 18 gallon slab fuel tank , fuel takeoff and twin K3 filler caps.  The spare wheel is mounted in the usual MG manner.    Whilst the body sports the traditional aeroscreens for both driver & passenger, it is also fitted with a full screen and unlike so many MGs of this type, not only has a  full/half tonneau cover, but also a well fitting roof that the previous owner blessed on many tours!

The dashboard houses a full compliment of K3 pattern  2" gauges,  the 6 inch 0-8000 rev. counter, full set toggle switches, Ki-gass injector pump, starter button  and dash mounted fuse box.    There is even a cabin operated choke-pull , so often annoyingly missing, plus a Kenlowe fan if needed to aid the factory fitted water pump.      The car is excellently road equipped with full lighting, horn,  lamp enclosed turn signals and headlamp stoneguards.

For peace of mind, the vehicle has been through our workshop to test, check and remedy any faults.   Oliver Richardson has kindly given me his seal of approval and fully road tested the car before being presented here.

This car gives rivals many of the K3 and N based specials, yet comes at far less cost for almost an identical driving experience,  and in most cases more manageable.  All-in-all,  a fabulous car you will want to keep AND USE.

Sold with MG Car Club's MMM registrar confirming original chassis stamping, guarantee plate and engine stamping;  UK period registration on V5c, factory chassis file, workshop manual and European rally papers. What a wonderful Christmas present to yourself ........and after all,  whose to say what its worth when IHT hits home??
